This Thursday, June 18, 2009, 7-9 pmSpeaker Meeting for Adults and Parents of Kids with AD/HD (and support groups) 3rd Thursday of every month - facilitated by Julie Giuffrida(facilitated this month by Barbara A. Cohen, Ph.D.)
Providence Tarzana Medical Center, 18321 Clark Street, Tarzana, CA 91356, 7-9 pm in the North Conference Room #1, #2 or #3 - the free standing building closest to Burbank Boulevard-NOT in the hospital itself - (make sure to get your free parking pass to park in the hospital parking lot)
Topic: Game Changer - Coaching for Parents of Children and Teens with AD/HD (Based on a Faculty training presentation to Bridges Academy, co-presented with Dr. Barbara A. Cohen, Ph.D., MFT in January 2009) Speaker: Peter Gregory, ACG
Presentation Summary:
If you can't win the game, change the rules! Learn how the rules can be changed so your child can "win"! It begins with a mindset... A mindset based on success, curiosity and the willingness to ask questions. Time after time after time, your child...
Forgets to bring their homework home with them... Doesn't get invited to play dates, birthday parties, sleepovers... Leaves the ssignment the two of you did late one school night in their backpack until it gets cleaned out (at home) over the weekend... Gets bored and picks a fight with their sibling... Begins the project due TOMORROW Sunday night... Refuses to get out of bed in the morning and get ready for school... Makes you feel (and sound!) like the Gestapo... Is told to try "harder"... Hears that they're not living up to their {potential"... Drives you and/or your partner to tears, anger or violence...
Do any of those examples ring a bell?
Getting a child, teen (or adult!) with AD/HD to do something they don't WANT to do is like trying to push water uphill. It takes tremendous effort, time and energy and worse yet, can ultimately be FUTILE. Even with medication, extra time, helpful teachers, tutoring, IEP's and 504's, students with AD/HD often need more to succeed in school. Assuming your child is properly diagnosed, what else can you do?
Change the rules!
This is a practical hands on presentation. Mr. Gregory will use audience examples to demonstrate the power of coaching and how parents can use a coaching mindset to radically transform interactions with their AD/HD child and with their TEACHERS.
He'll use three simple, inexpensive and easily available tools to show how any parent can start:
A blueboard, milk crates, and a folder.
Not happy, want something better for your AD/HD child, you and your family? You CAN change the game - beginning Thursday night, June 18th.
Speaker Bio Summary:
Diagnosed in the fall of 2003 with AD/HD, Mr. Gregory shifted his focus from recruiting high tech professionals to coaching children and adults with AD/HD. Believing that people are much more than their "diagnosis," he combines a strengths based approach modeled from Mel Levine and Robert Brooks to address the challenges of AD/HD unique to each person. Bby identifying and focusing on their strengths, he helps children and adults apply them to succeed in school and work. By coaching people to learn to apply what they do well to new situations, they develop greater self-confidence, self-esteem and increased resiliency. Ultimately becoming more capable of dealing with life's opportunities and challenges.
Mr. Gregory volunteers for CHADD San Fernando Valley as the Assistant Cordinator, speaks locally and nationally to groups about AD/HD and was the co-creator of the StandTogether Support Group for CHADD SFV (2005).

Speaker: Barbara A. Cohen, Ph.D., MFT SFV CHADD Chapter Coordinator
Presentation
Millions of children and adults live with AD/HD. Millions of others live or interact with those with AD/HD.
In a multi-modal approach to optimizing life with AD/HD, many different professionals might be necessary: Diagnosticians, medication management doctors, nutritionists, therapists, tutors, coaches, advocates, educational attorneys – to name but a few.
Whether you are a parent of a child with AD/HD, an adult with AD/HD or both – bring your needs and questions to this CHADD meeting.
Objectives:
Attendees will become familiar with what the role of various professionals is. Attendees will become familiar with the SFV CHADD’s resource book and its expansion. Address questions about where to start if you suspect AD/HD is impacting your life or that of your child.

Presentation
Was 2008 tough? Kids with AD/HD and ODD can be demanding...exhausting to parent.
Want 2009 to be better?
Get a head-start and join us for a BIG DOSE of Holiday HOPE as Dr. Shari Pollock and Dr. Marty Goodman share their expertise on:
Treating AD/HD and ODD – The Intersection of Prescription and Therapy
THIS Thursday, December 18th at 7 pm. Seating and FREE PARKING are limited – come early!
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) occurs in over 50% of children with AD/HD.
ODD can exacerbate the challenges parents already face raising children with AD/HD. Families can experience constant conflict and turmoil. Parents get burnt out, overwhelmed and exasperated (ANGRY!) with their children. Parents are often at odds, finding fault or arguing about what needs to be done about their child with their spouse/partner. Martial relationships are strained (or destroyed). Other children in the family suffer as well.
While AD/HD can be treated with medication, ODD can not.
What’s a parent to do? What do you do and where do you find help? What works????
We often have specialists discuss what their piece of the AD/HD puzzle can do. But there’s always the other piece(s) that needs to be addressed.
This Thursday night you’ll hear how two professional colleagues work together to solve issues that neither can alone. Solutions that can make you and your family’s life MUCH BETTER.
Join us as Dr. Shari Pollock and Dr. Marty Goodman discuss how medical treatment and therapy can be combined to help kids (and their parents!)
An expert on psychopharmacology and AD/HD, Dr. Pollock will share: Why medication(s) can be a useful tool How they work
Why they require close follow-up and what that means for parents
 Benefits and pitfalls
An expert on parenting children with AD/HD, Dr. Goodman will share:
How therapy can help Skills you can learn (and teach your children)
A parenting process for children with AD/HD Special challenges of ODD
